There is no fixed statutory frequency, but HSE guidance recommends that monitoring is repeated whenever there is a significant change in work processes, materials, workforce or controls. For substances with a WEL, annual monitoring is common practice for higher-risk operations. For lower-risk workplaces, a baseline survey followed by periodic checks every two to three years is often sufficient. We advise on an appropriate monitoring frequency for your specific situation.
Workplace Exposure Limits are legally binding maximum concentrations of airborne substances to which workers may be exposed over a working day (8-hour time-weighted average, or TWA) or a short period (15-minute short-term exposure limit, STEL). They are published by HSE in document EH40 and reviewed periodically. Employers must ensure that exposure does not exceed the applicable WEL; where the substance is a carcinogen or asthmagen, exposure must be reduced as far below the WEL as reasonably practicable.
