Viridian Air has successfully completed an Air Quality (Neutral) Assessment and a Dust Risk Assessment and Management Plan for a residential redevelopment project in Barnet, London.
The project involves the construction of new houses on an empty piece of land along the busy Great North Way (A1) posing a challenge in providing justification for air quality neutrality and establishing an appropriate dust management plan.
About the Assessment
The primary aim of this Air Quality (Neutral) Assessment (AQNA) was to establish if a detailed air quality neutral assessment is required against Transport Emissions benchmark and Building Emissions Benchmark. The project also required a comprehensive Air Quality and Dust Management Plan (AQDMP) in accordance with the Control of Dust and Emissions during Construction and Demolition SPG (2014) issued by the Greater London Authority.
The AQA was informed by:
- Air quality predictions and monitoring results from the London Borough of Barnet’s latest Air Quality Annual Status Report
- Defra background emissions data
- London Air Quality Network (LAQN) measurements
Our Approach
Viridian Air carried out the air quality neutral assessment following the GLA’s Air Quality Neutral Guidance mandated by Policy SI1 of the London Plan.
We conducted a detailed dust risk assessment following SPG 2014 methodology and produced a robust, site-specific Dust Management Plan (DMP) addressing both demolition and construction phase dust emissions.
The plan sets out:
- Clear mitigation measures to control dust
- Defined monitoring strategies to track compliance
- Control procedures to safeguard local air quality and meet council requirements
